December 2017 Meeting and Newsletter

Greetings Rhody Fly Rodders & Friends,

Please find enclosed below, a copy (PDF) of the RFR December newsletter.
This month is our Annual Fly Tying Expo.
We have this event every year in December where the club gets together, enjoys some holiday cheer, and ties flies for our favorite charity. We then take these flies and sell them at our meetings and at the different fishing shows we attend. Last year we raised $500. for ‘Project Healing Waters’, a national organization the teaches wounded & disabled veterans how to fly fish and tie flies.
For this coming year our chosen charity is ‘Reel Recovery’, another national organization, that offers retreats for men recovering from all sorts of cancer. They provide a safe, reflective environment of fly fishing instruction and tying, plus provide information about cancer related resources, all at no cost. Truly a worthy cause!
We will have free bottled water, soft drinks, popcorn, pretzels, Christmas cookies and coffee for you while you ‘Tie for Charity’.
We’ll also will have bucket raffles and a nice door prize. Of course, liquid libations are also available from our barkeep, Jim!
So, come join us, bring your fly tying equipment, and tie some flies for a great cause, or come watch and learn from the experts.
Wishing you and your families a wonderful Holiday season – Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah & and a Happy New Year!

November Meeting / Newsletter

Rhody Fly Rodders Members & Friends,

Here is our November newsletter. This month’s meeting is on Tuesday, Nov., 21st.
We will have as our guest speaker, an old friend, Dean Clark, from ‘Stripers Forever’.
As you may know, Stripers Forever is an all volunteer organization dedicated to making the Striped Bass a gamefish. They are advocates for the conservation and responsible stewardship of wild striped bass along the Atlantic Coast.
Dean has been our guest speaker many times before, always bringing us the latest news on regulation changes, new problems, and the future assessments of our beloved striped bass. This time he will also touch on the updated news on the Atlantic Menhaden, the most important food source for striped bass.
In the newsletter you will find two more pages added to our regular edition. These two pages are a tribute to our fallen friend, and longtime member Ron Montecalvo, who passed away while fishing on the Narrow River, last month.
Please plan on joining us for this meeting, it should be very informative.
Thanks,
Peter

Sad News

Dear Rhody Fly Rodders and Friends,

Tonight I have very sad news to share with you all.
Longtime member Ron Montecalvo, good friend to to all, and great friend to many, has passed away.
Seems Ron was fishing today at his favorite fishing spot on the Narrow River, in Narragansett, RI, had a massive heart attack and fell into the river. Few of the other fishermen came to his rescue, along with a couple of boaters, and was rushed to the hospital, but couldn’t be revived.
Ron was one of the original ‘Rhody’ members, joining in the mid-’60’s. He was a wonderful friend to me, and after many, many years of serving this club, he continued to work as an advisor to help run things. I and just about everyone else will miss him immensely. Rest in Peace, my friend.
His wife’s address is below in case you want to send a card. Check the ProJo for his arrangements.
Phillis Montecalvo
Best to you all,
Peter
