April 2015 Rhody Newsletter

Rhody Fly Rodders members and friends,

Here is the April ‘Rhody’ Newsletter for your enjoyment. This will be the last newsletter until we reconvene for our winter meetings in October.

Of course we will have our ‘Summer Fishing Get-Togethers’ till then. The list of the places and directions of these get-togethers are in this newsletter, and we hope to see you all sometime during the summer.

We have our annual cookout get-together at this April meeting, and invite you all to attend. We will do a bit of fly casting on the lawn of the club before the cookout, and after we eat we will have an interesting DVD, called “Rivers of a Lost Coast”, showing steelhead fishing on the rivers of the west coast from the 1920′ thru the 1960′s and the tragic demise of those fabulous rivers. A great show!

Please join us, bring a friend!

Have a great summer and fishing season!

Best to you,

Peter Nilsen

Menhaden Fisheries Propaganda?

greenpeace-activists-prevent-i

Greenpeace activists prevent industrial fishing giant Omega from reaching a large school of menhaden.

The commercial menhaden industry is promoting plenty of menhaden, preparing to make a move to get the quota restrictions eased at the ASMFC level.

Since the restrictions are starting to work, and the menhaden are
starting to increase, they want to go right back to catching as many as
they can.

Typical commercial attitude.

March 2015 Newsletter

Rhody Fly Rodders and friends,

This month’s meeting will feature a presentation by Rene Letourneau, a fly fishing and light tackle guide from Rhode Island, working out of his guide service, ‘On the Rocks Charters’.
Rene’s presentation will be on “Fly fishing for Bass & Blues in the white water, heavy structure of the Rhode Island shoreline.
This should be an interesting and informative presentation. With the ‘fishing show’ season over, it’s time to get those flies tied and your fishing equipment in order and time to ‘talk-up the new fishing season, that’s just around the corner.
As usual we will have our bucket raffles, and monthly door prize, plus our special FREE drawing for a $50. gift certificate to ‘The Saltwater Edge’.
Please come join us. Open to the general public.
Bring a friend, share the experience!
Tight Lines,
Peter Nilsen

Urgent – Voice Your Opinion

Rhody Members,

If you are at all concerned about the state or status of the Striped Bass, and are at all interested in voicing your opinion about it’s plight, then consider writing a letter to the  Ri Division of Fish & Wildlife, and to other notables that have influence in RI’s position on the new proposed Striped Bass regulations.
It is important that you do this right away, it’s probably best by email, as the meeting and deadline for comments is this coming Monday, the 16th.
Please go to Saltwater Edge’s link below and read what you can do to make your voice heard.
We as a group are in favor of the 1 fish@28″ across the board… meaning all recreational, and for-hire, fishers.  If our state doest’t adopt the one fish law, and continues the 2 fish limit, trophy hunters will coming from their ‘one fish state’, to take advantage of our fishery. The only way this will be fair is for, is for all states to adopt the ‘one fish@28″.
Written comments concerning the proposed regulations may be submitted to Peter Duhamel, Division of Fish and Wildlife Marine Fisheries office, 3 Fort Wetherill Road, Jamestown, RI 02835 no later than 12:00 Noon on February 16, 2015.
Please CC all notable persons from the Governor and DEM Director, down to committee members, as is on Peter Jenkins’ list.
Thanks,
Peter
