Our December meeting is our Annual Fly Tying Event. Every year we tie flies to sell at the RISAA Show, our meetings, and other club events. We then donate the proceeds to charity.
This year we will be tying flies for the charity, Reel Recovery. This organization is dedicated to helping men who have, or who have had Cancer, by bringing them into the peaceful world of fly fishing. Reel Recovery organizes 20 retreats nationwide where medical facilitators and fly fishing instructors provide a safe reflective environment, fly fishing instruction, and medical consultations at no cost. Next year our Annual Fly Tying Event will be for another of our favorite charities, Project Healing Waters.
Let’s make a concerted effort to make this meeting meaningful and constructive. To do so, we need everyone to participate. To make this as easy, simple, and user friendly as possible, there will be three tables dedicated to tying specific saltwater flies. These tables will be set up and organized by a mentor, and they will supply the tying materials and hooks. To participate at these tables, all you need to bring is a vise, scissors, bobbin, and thread. The patterns at these tables are below.
Gibbs Fly (Ray Stachelek), Rhody Flatwing (Wes Wyatt), Semper Fleye (Jeff Perry)
At the remaining tables you can tie any fly, but you will need to bring the materials/ equipment for your specific pattern. Any of these flies can be packaged and donated to our efforts.
There will be complimentary soda, water, and a limited array of snacks. If you would like you can add to the mix! Our members are not only great fly fishermen but also great holiday cookie testers.
Welcome Back!
The indoor meeting season is off and running. It was a pleasure to see us together again after a very hot and muggy summer. You could sense a little buzz in the air too. It was probably from hearing so many hungry growling stomachs ready to be fed. Our Pizza Blast always excites a crowd. First meeting attendance had a good turnout, but a few of our regulars had other fishing obligations.
Robert (Bob) Popovics, POP FLEYES Founder
We celebrate Bob Popovics’ life and his contributions to the World of Fly Fishing. Bob’s passing has left all of us sorrowful and full of regret. Bob was a respected innovator and stalwart in the fly tying industry. He stretched the boundaries of fly designs by clever use of materials. Our love goes out to his family and friends. It’s only a thread that holds this fraternity of tiers together. We now know how easy it can break.
Important Notice: Club Election Night this November Meeting! Our annual club elections for general officers and board members will be held at this month’s meeting. It is important that you be present. We need a good turnout. Spread the word. Everyone should be informed. It’s an open and free election process. It’s Democracy in action. “Voting is your civic duty.” Club Elections have consequences. Every vote does matter like our last year’s election. You have the power to make key decisions on how your club should run. Voting is your chance to stand up for the issues you care about. It’s your right. Not voting is giving up your voice. Voting is an opportunity for change. Do you want to make a positive impact in this club? Voting gives you that chance! There are many issues affected by elections. What path do you want this club to go? How active do you want us to be? How can we make this club stronger going ahead? There were no nominations for any office at our October meeting. Declarations will be held from the floor. To run for office or vote you have to be an active up-to-date paid dues member.
See you at the next meeting.
Every vote counts!
Capt. Ray Stachelek

Tuesday, December 19th – starting at 6:30pm
Let’s clear the air (or should we say water) about color in liquid media? What do fish
actually see in their environment that’s quite different than ours? How are true colors
and imaging affected by motion and light refraction? How do fish behave with constant
changes of the color spectrum? What do they see with objects/images under motion?
Much of the information we receive is antidotal in nature based on our observation and
experiences. Could there be a more factual scientific explanation available to help the
angler? We’ll try to dispel some of these common myths with factual based scientific
evidence to help the angler understand more fully how fish might see our world.
So, please join us on Dec 20th! There will be some great bucket raffles,
and we will have some Hot Coffee & Christmas cookies….plus liquid
refreshments are always available from Jim, our capable barkeeper!!
